The transfer case is what makes four-wheel driving possible. It’s connected to the transmission and distributes the torque it receives from the engine to the front and rear axles via the driveshafts. If your car is strictly two-wheel drive then it does not have a transfer case since all the torque is constantly going to one axle.

What the Transfer Case Does
In cars that have four-wheel drive the transfer case splits the torque between the front and rear axles. Transfer cases are either chain or gear driven. Chain driven transfer cases are more common since they’re quieter and lighter but some drivers still prefer the gear driven transfer cases since they tend to be more durable.
Transfer cases in trucks usually allow the driver to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive for efficiency and drivability. Many also come equipped with high and low gearing that give the car better performance on steep grades or when towing heavy loads.
